4. When Maia May Be Required by Law to Disclose Your Information
Maia treats your information as confidential. However, there are limited circumstances where she may be required or permitted by law to disclose it.
### Child sexual abuse — mandatory reporting
Queensland law requires any adult who reasonably believes a child is being or has been sexually abused to report this to the police, unless there is a reasonable excuse.
- "Child" means under 16, or under 18 with an intellectual disability.
- "Reasonable belief" means a rational person with the same information would form that belief.
- A reasonable excuse includes: you have already reported it to child safety authorities, or you know someone else has or will report it.
- Maximum penalty: 3 years imprisonment.
This is not optional. It is a legal obligation on all adults in Queensland.
### Serious and imminent threat
If Maia believes there is a serious and imminent threat to your life, health, or safety, or to the life, health, or safety of another person, she may disclose necessary information to emergency services, medical practitioners, or other relevant parties to reduce that threat.
### Court orders and legal proceedings
Maia may disclose your information where required by law, in connection with legal proceedings or prospective legal proceedings, or to establish, exercise, or defend her legal rights.
### Law enforcement
Where required or authorised by law to assist law enforcement agencies in specific circumstances.
In all cases, Maia will disclose only the minimum information necessary to meet the legal or safety obligation. Where possible, she will discuss the disclosure with you first.

A note on legal obligations: Maia is not a registered health practitioner, so she does not have the same mandatory reporting obligations as a doctor or psychologist (except for the child sexual abuse reporting duty, which applies to all adults in Queensland). She still has a duty of care. If she forms a reasonable belief that a child is at risk of serious harm, she must report it to police, and the law protects such reports.
